Be Your Own Guitar Tech With These Key Tools
There’s a lot that goes into becoming a well-rounded guitar tech, but in this post, we’re keeping things simple. We’ll focus on the essential tools for basic electric guitar maintenance like adjusting pickup height, installing pickups, and using tech to measure and diagnose wiring issues. We won’t be diving into truss rod adjustments, fret leveling, or full guitar setup techniques just yet; those topics will come later as you continue building your skills to become a fine tuned guitar tech.

Be Your Own Guitar Tech
Behind every passion are the tools that keep that passion maintained and sustainable. You don't expect your car to run forever without adding fuel, exchanging oil, replacing its brakes and tires, etc. The same goes for our beloved instruments - they need our attention to continue performing well at our beck and call.
Stringed instruments, like a car, need to be tuned up and maintained. Every time you bring your electric or acoustic guitar to the shop, it costs you money and downtime. Understanding a little bit about guitar tools and the wide variety of guitar tech equipment available can save you a ton of headaches on tour when something goes wrong, or at a minimum, save you a bunch of money (average tech fees in the USA are between $75-$150), and time by doing it yourself at home.
In this post we will explore a few of our favorite tools that we use around the Lambertones shop for everyday guitar tech jobs as well as some of the features of our existing guitar tech tools we have to help you get the job done. You can check out these guitar tech tools here.

Complete your guitar tech responsibilities with ease.
Using the right guitar tech tools takes the guesswork, and the frustration, out of working on your instrument. Have you been using those pen-style soldering irons you found in Grandpa's toolbox? A NIGHTMARE right?! You can't heat anything worth a dang until it overheats and suddenly it melts everything within reach. This is not a good tool for maintaining your beloved instruments.
Whether you're swapping pickups, troubleshooting wiring issues, or fine-tuning hardware, having reliable, purpose-built tools makes every job smoother, faster, and more accurate. When you know how to use essential gear like a multimeter, soldering iron, and precision screwdrivers, you can avoid common mistakes like stripped screws, weak solder joints, and undiagnosed wiring gremlins. Learning and applying basic guitar tech skills empowers you to maintain and upgrade your instrument with confidence—saving you time, money, and giving you full control over your tone journey.

Knowing how to use a Digital Multimeter (DMM) is one of the most powerful skills a guitar tech can have. This simple electrical tool lets you confirm. without guessing, whether you’ve got a short to ground, if your “500k” tone pot is actually 500k (and not 425k), or whether your brand-new pickup set is reading within spec.
The truth is, you can’t be measured cannot be managed. So learn to measure your guitar signal! Having a DMM on hand gives you a clear window into what’s actually happening inside your guitar’s tone circuit, making it an essential tool for confirming solid connections and tracking down issues fast.

Tools available from the Lambertones Guitar Tech Bundle:
-
Digital Multimeter (DMM): Accurately measures electrical values such as resistance and continuity, essential for diagnosing wiring issues and ensuring proper connections.
-
Precision Screwdriver Set: Features various sizes to fit different screw types on your guitar, allowing for careful adjustments without damaging components.
-
Soldering Station: Provides a reliable heat source for soldering wires and components, crucial for secure and lasting electrical connections.

A precision screwdriver is one of my most used tools not only when building guitar pickups but when I am performing tech work on clients guitars or maintaining our own collection here at Lambertones. The Hybro screwdriver specifically has a low-torque motor, making it really easy to tighten precision screws like pickup height adjusting screw, bridge saddle screws for intonation, tuning gears on the headstock, or even the screws holding your pickguard or pickup rings to the guitar body. A good screwdriver should be on ever tech bench, guitar case, and even home tool kit because it's such a universally useful tool.
How To Become A Guitar Tech
Becoming a guitar tech starts with curiosity, grows with hands-on experience, and thrives with the right tools. You don’t need to master fretwork or neck resets on day one—instead, begin by learning the basics: how to use a multimeter to diagnose wiring issues, how to solder clean connections, and how to properly set pickup height.
By understanding your tools and what’s happening under the hood of your instrument, you’ll build the confidence and skill set needed to handle common maintenance tasks.
Here are just a few reasons why guitar players, just like you, are loving the Lambertones Tech Tool line:
-
Ergonomic Design: Whether you're handling the screwdriver, solder iron, or the DMM - they're comfortable and easy to maneuver and predictable with placement, so you can be certain you won't miss that pickguard screw and dent your finish.

"This tool is hands down a must have for any guitar player. From needing to make minor adjustments, to a full blown install of some new Lambertones. My fingers don’t hurt after adjusting my action or pickup height. Again, a must have!"
-Daniel R
“Fantastic kit. Soldering iron is by the far the best I’ve ever used. The multimeter pen is handy, but the Hybro screwdriver is my most used tool. Perfect for doing guitar repairs AND keyboard repairs. Very happy!“
-Haydn
"What a difference! I previously had a budget soldering iron and I couldn't believe what a difference it made using this one. I did a pickup installation and it went as smooth and as easily as I could've hoped. I highly recommend getting this if you have had difficulty in the past with cheaper options."
